Backfilling is the process of refilling an excavated area with the right material and compacting it in layers - around foundations, retaining walls, utility trenches, and other below-grade work. Proper backfill and compaction prevent settling, protect the structure, and create a stable base for whatever goes on top.

Backfilling is required after foundation or utility work, around new retaining walls, and when restoring trenches once lines are installed. Skipping proper compaction - or using the wrong material - leads to sinking driveways, cracked slabs, and settling that's expensive to fix later.
